In Bangladesh, main stream students of class 1-12, studies in Bangla medium. Public exams like secondary and higher secondary are also taken in Bangla medium. But the medium of instructions in universities is English. For many students, this is a large barrier for them to coup up with the higher education and carry a good result. The second barrier is the difference in the nature of curriculum. In universities, curriculums are designed for a specific subject which have certain objectives. These required revision of general subjects like, physics, chemistry, botany, mathematics, English, accounting, etc. as prerequisite. As minor subject, these are added in the curriculum of a completely different subject. Teaching of these subjects are necessary at the very beginning of the undergraduate program which is first year or the first one or two semesters. Studying the similar subject in different language and for different objective makes it very difficult for the students to get a good grade.

In the higher study, students chooses applied subject in the hope of having good values in job market. This makes the fundamental subject least of their interest. It pushes the authorities of educational institutions to offer more seats in the applied subjects. For these applied subjects, the fundamental studies are kept pre-requisite. This is the only implicit bias that keeps the fundamental study alive in the higher study.

Concerning the target audience of this book, it is our feeling that, every students having started an undergraduate study in a science or engineering discipline can benefit from reading this book.
